Middle and high school classrooms, take a LIVE Virtual Field Trip to Ohio Stoneware in Zanesville, Ohio, on March 12 at 1 p.m. ET, celebrating the International Day of Ceramics!

Once known as the Pottery Capital of the World, Zanesville is home to Ohio Stoneware—one of America’s last remaining commercial pottery manufacturers. During this interactive tour, students will explore a working factory, see how raw clay becomes finished stoneware, learn about the region’s 200-year ceramics history, and hear from the people who make it all happen.

Here are some ways this event can align with topics you may already be teaching: • Earth Science: Connect the use of local clay deposits to lessons on geology, natural resources, and how materials from the earth are used in manufacturing.

  • Physical Science & Chemistry: Explore how heat transforms clay during the firing process, tying into lessons on states of matter, chemical changes, and the properties of materials.
  • History & Social Studies: Use Zanesville’s story as a case study in American manufacturing, industrialization, the rise and decline of regional industries, and small business entrepreneurship.
  • Career Exploration: Introduce students to career pathways in ceramics manufacturing, materials science, skilled trades, and small business ownership.
