Middle and high school teachers of environmental science, biology, chemistry and physics: Virtually connect your classroom to a working Ohio corn farm for a day in the life of a farmer.
Join us for a LIVE trip to Haerr Grain Farm to see what farmers do to prepare for planting, growing and harvesting corn, and discover how science and technology guide their daily decisions. Scott Haerr (third-generation farmer and Ohio Corn Marketing Program Vice Chair) and his son Justin (OSU Agricultural Systems Management graduate) will explain the annual farming practices to produce a corn crop and demonstrate harvest operations during the live visit. They will also answer students’ questions during the LIVE 45-minute event.
Students will experience a day in the life of corn farmers and learn:
- Daily decisions about equipment operation and field conditions
- How farmers use data from soil analysis and crop monitoring
- Technology applications for precision agriculture
- Problem-solving and management decisions farmers make each day
Students will:
- Know…the annual process that farmers plan and execute to grow corn to harvest
- Understand…that corn production incorporates advances in biotechnology, chemistry, machinery and GPS technology to decrease competition for growth and increase yield
- Be able to…determine how each component utilized in corn production impacts its yield potential
Perfect for classes studying:
- Environmental science and agricultural sustainability
- Plant biology and soil science
- Chemistry real-world applications
This virtual field trip is brought to classrooms at no cost by Ohio Corn & Wheat farmers.
